Rampaging gunmen have killed no fewer than fifteen innocent persons and
injured many people at the market in Agbonchia, Eleme Local Government
Area of Rivers State.
The three gunmen, who rode motorcycles, on Saturday evening, shot
indiscriminately at the people, especially youths at the motorcycles’
washing section of the ever-busy market.
Many people scampered for safety, while the unfortunate ones either got killed instantly or were severely injured.
It was learnt from witnesses on Sunday by our source that the casualty
figure was so high, because the people at the market thought the gunmen
came to wash their motorcycles, until they started shooting at close
range, leading to fatality.
Our reporter also gathered that after the shooting spree, the youthful gunmen quickly escaped on their motorcycles.
The Rivers police Spokesman, Muhammad Kidaya Ahmad, a Deputy
Superintendent of Police (DSP), who confirmed the incident, stated that
the command had arrested a suspect and currently undergoing
interrogation, while investigation into the incident was ongoing.
Ahmad, however, claimed that five persons were killed in the shooting
spree, stressing that police’s preliminary investigation revealed that
the incident was an attack by a cult group.
The police’s spokesman assured that the fleeing gunmen would soon be
apprehended and prosecuted, to serve as a deterrent to other
criminally-minded persons in the state.

3kids survive as trailer crushes Father, mother and son in a tragic Trailer Accident
A Happy family's ride together yesterday ended on a bloody note.
The father and husband Mr. Okechukwu Odinigwe, his wife and
eldest son died when a trailer rammed into their car at Esther Obiakor
Junction, Agu Awka on the Onitsha-Enugu Expressway between the mid hour and 1pm.
A six–month-old baby boy, his brother and sister, aged four and seven, were injured.
The three children, who survived the
accident, are two boys and a girl. However, they were rushed to Regina Caeli
Hospital in Awka by Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officials.
When our source visited the
hospital yesterday, the survivors were seen at the Intensive Care Unit
(ICU) where doctors were struggling to save their lives.
Sympathizers were seen wailing at the scene of the crash, cursing the driver of the killer-trailer who, they alleged, was reckless.
The driver, according to eyewitnesses,
disappeared after the accident, which involved the trailer marked LSR
897XQ and an ash–coloured Toyota Camry in which the family was ridding.
The number plate of the mangled car was not seen.
An eyewitness, who identified himself as Chijiuoke, told our source that the truck driver refused to heed the warning of those who flagged him down to reduce his speed.
According to him, the car was heading
towards Enugu and trying to make a detour at the junction when the
trailer lost control and rammed into it.
The late Mr Odinigwe hailed from Urunnebo in Enugwu Ukwu, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State.
A team of FRSC officials and policemen were at the scene, going through the items found in the vehicles.
Police spokesman Uche Eze, confirmed the
incident and another one that occurred at Okpu River in Okija in
Ihilala Local Government Area where a driver of a Mitsubishi L300 died.
He said investigations had begun to unravel the cause of the accidents and for the proper identification of the victims.
Governor Willie Obiano has sympathised with the family of the victims of the accident.
Obiano said his administration would pick all medical expenses incurred by the surviving trio.
Expressing his condolences to the
family, the governor assured Ndi Anambra that he would ensure the safety
of lives of road users by regulating the movement of articulated
vehicles.

A security guard on Sunday averted what would have been a high casualty from a bomb planted at a church in Plateau State.
The ECWA church was filled with worshippers when the private security guard spotted the bomb at the entrance, witnesses told our source.
The guard picked the bomb and threw it off the church before it exploded instantly. No one was killed from the explosion, although the guard sustained injuries on the leg and is currently being treated, a worshipper said.
Another witness said the police anti-bomb squad, on arrival, discovered another explosive device that was planted at the restroom of the church.
The ECWA church in Tudunwa is located near the Federal Secretariat in Jos, Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Meanwhile, the police have also said no one was killed from the explosion. The police spokesperson in Plateau, Abuh Emmanuel, told our source that anti-bomb experts have been deployed to the scene.
“Experts have been sent there immediately to ascertain those who planted the explosion, and possibly, the manufacturers of the device. But I was told no one died in the incident,” he said.
The Sunday explosion occurred one week after a similar explosion at a Redeemed Church in Yobe State claimed many lives.

Nigerian Army Frees 182 Suspected Boko Haram Detainees
The Nigerian Army has granted freedom to 182 suspected Boko Haram members detained in military facilities in Maiduguri.
The development is coming in accordance with the military authority’s pledge to carry out its operations within the law.
Although, the force may have intensified its onslaught against the Islamist group, but it appears to be making good its promise.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Kenneth Minimah, handed the detainees to the Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, during the Army Day celebration in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital in north-east Nigeria.
The Army Chief noted that the detainees, who were arrested from various parts of the state, had not been found culpable of the offenses they were initially charged with.

"Leave Me Alone" - Keshi tells Nigerians
The former coach of the super eagles Stephen Keshi has told Nigerians to leave him alone after being relieved of his duties by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Vanguard reports.
Yesterday the former Nigeria’s head coach asked soccer fans to allow him rest with his family in the United State of America as he was no longer in charge of the national team.

Stephen Keshi said that fans should direct their questions on the Eagles to the assistant coach of the team, Abdulahi Yusuf.
He said: “Please, I want Nigerians to leave me alone and allow
me spend time with my family. The only thing on my mind now is to be
with my family and I don’t want to be bothered with any matter
associated with the Super Eagles.I want people to understand that I do
not have anything on the Super Eagles. The only thing I want to do is be
with my loved ones. Direct all your questions to Yusuf or whoever is
coaching the team”.

Twin Sisters Give Birth On The Same Day
Twin sisters Katie Bowden and Amy Meredith-Davies have done
everything together their whole lives, but these sisters never imagined
they would give birth on the same day.

Amy, a health, social care and wellbeing facilitator who lives in Neath said: “We’ve
done everything in our lives at similar times. Our family are used to
it. We got married within a year of each other too. Katie got married in
June 2012 and I was married in August 2013. I just can’t get over the
fact that we fell pregnant at the same time.”
“It was bizarre because I was in labour and had a message from my mother saying Amy was being induced. It was really funny because when my mum came to visit she would tell the midwife that she now had to leave to see my twin who was also having a baby. Everyone thought it was amazing.” said Katie, a teacher from Clydach.
Katie gave birth to her daughter Ella, at 5.38am in Singleton
Hospital in Swansea while Amy had her son Henry, in Bridgend’s Princess
of Wales Hospital at 11.15pm the same day.
