Boko Haram Attacks: Police Bans Hawking

In response to the latest Boko Haram bombings in mosques and churches in the northern region of the country, Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, has asked all Commissioners of Police in the country to beef up security at all worship centres.

This was made known to the public in a statement issued by CSP Abayomi Shogunle, deputy public relations officer.

The IG tasked the CP’s in the country with providing sufficient security in venues where Muslims break-fast in the evenings.
Arase asked worshippers to be vigilant and to report any suspicious persons or substance or activities in or around their environment to relevant authorities.

Also, street hawking and all forms of trading on Abuja roads/Highways especially road intersections, traffic light points and traffic hold-ups has been been prohibited.

Also plans are in place to demolish all unauthorized taxi parks and bus stops formed around the Federal Secretariat, Abuja.

The only types of buses and taxi allowed to operate are those painted in authorized commercial colours and they will be allowed to operate at designated taxi parks and bus stops in and around the Central Area, Abuja.

The police also warned violators to desist from the banned acts or risk being arrested as police units have been directed to enforce the new orders.
The laws are in response to the Boko haram bombing of a redeemed christian church of God along Bauchi road in Potiskum Town, Yobe State.

The suicide bomber infiltrated a local branch of the church killing six people including himself.

On July 5th, the insurgents also hit church and a restaurant in a coordinated twin bombings. At least fifty people were said to have died after the explosions.

The first explosion occurred at Bauchi road, just before the University of Jos main campus, while the second explosion occurred around Yantaya, Nasarawa Gwon area, both in Jos North local government area of the state.

Massacre In Jos Increases Buhari's Pressure

President Muhammadu Buhari has come under serious pressure following a wave of insurgent attacks that has continued to threaten the peace of the nation.

The emergency services said on Monday, that at least 44 people were killed in twin bomb blasts in the central Nigerian city of Jos, after a wave of mass casualty attacks blamed on Boko Haram militants.

According to AFP count, the bombing on Sunday took the death toll from raids, explosions and suicide attacks to 267 this month alone and up to 524 since Muhammadu Buhari became president on May 29.

General Buhari however, has repeatedly vowed to crush the Islamists and is eyeing the deployment of a strengthened regional force at the end of this month to deliver a hammer blow.

However, with the death toll rising by the day, attacks increasing and the military seemingly unable to prevent attacks on civilians, the President has come under pressure to act fast.

Reports have it that on Monday evening, a young girl thought to be aged just 13 blew herself up near a major mosque in the northern city of Kano as worshipers gathered for prayers but caused no deaths or injuries.

A second attack targeted the packed Shagalinku restaurant in a shopping complex on the Bauchi Road, which is popular with travellers from the northeast.

According to a local resident Mohammed Shafi’, who is a regular at the restaurant, the whole neighbourhood shook from the blast and he counted 25 bodies, including four waitresses.

He said “The restaurant was badly damaged. Bits of human flesh, blood stains, plastic tables and chairs and all sorts of personal items litter the place.”

The Jos massacre followed a suicide attack on a church in the north-eastern city of Potiskum on Sunday, which left five people dead, including the pastor, a woman and her two children.

Just last week, Islamist militants fighters raided a number of villages around the Lake Chad area, killing more than 150 worshipers as they prayed in mosques.
On Sunday, Buhari said that Boko Haram, which has ties to the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq, had “declared war on all that we value.”

The President promised to do “everything possible to eradicate Boko Haram, terrorism and mindless extremism from Nigeria in the shortest possible time.”
The resumption of Boko Haram’s guerrilla-style tactics against civilian targets follows its capture of territory across the northeast last year.

The rebels were reportedly pushed out of towns and villages since the turn of the year but the attacks prove that the group is resilient and formidable, one that requires higher fire power.

Speculations by security analysts have shown that a decline in the intensity of operations by the existing multilateral force of Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon has allowed the rebels to regroup and rearm.

They further speculate that the increase in attacks during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan has coincided with Buhari being distracted by other pertinent issues such as the decline in the economy.

Survey has shown that the patience of the highly lethargic Nigerian populace is wearing thing.

Hon. Danladi Angulu Kwasu, a retired Wing Commander, with the Nigeria Air Force, at a Press Conference in Kaduna yesterday accused the Nigerian Defence Academy, NDA, of deliberating pushing his 19- year -old son, Elshadai Kwasu, (NDA/10037) , into a 100 metre-deep lake, and drowning him during a training .
Kwasua, now a member of Kaduna State House of Assembly, KDHA, representing Zangon Kataf State constituency, alleged that out of negligence, about 20 cadets had died in swimming exercise with the NDA doing nothing to change the situation.

A week of activity in nigeria!!! Nigeria's Boko Haram crisis: Jos blasts kill scores

Two bomb attacks on the central Nigerian city of Jos have left at least 44 people dead, the authorities say.

A restaurant and a mosque were targeted on Sunday night.
No-one has claimed responsibility but militant group Boko Haram has attacked Jos before, even though it is not in north-east Nigeria where the Islamists normally operate.

The blasts are the latest in a series of deadly attacks in recent days which have seen more than 200 people killed.
The attacks came shortly after the Ramadan fast was broken, with both sites full of people.

Of the 44 dead, 23 were killed at the restaurant and 21 at the mosque, Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency (Nema) says.

There are also 47 people being treated for injuries, but emergency officials are still gathering information, so the figures may rise.

The blast at the restaurant was caused by a bomb that had been planted, whereas the mosque was attacked by a suicide bomber and that explosion was preceded by gunfire, the BBC's Ishaq Khalid reports.
Eyewitness Akaria Ahammed said: "When they started shooting people, people started running helter skelter for their lives.

"Unfortunately those that stood up were shot."

Our correspondent says that many believe that the mosque's imam, who was preaching at the time, may have been the target.
Sheikh Muhammad Sani Yahya Jingir, who survived the attack, is known for preaching against Boko Haram and has written a book, which criticises the group, called Boko Halal (Western education is permitted - Boko Haram means Western education is forbidden).

He has survived a previous assassination attempt at his home and is seen as one of the most influential clerics in Nigeria.

Why the upsurge in attacks?

It is not unusual for there to be a heightened risk of jihadist attacks during the holy Muslim month of Ramadan.

Boko Haram may be trying to deepen its ties with the jihadists fighting in Iraq and Syria who had called for "a month of disasters for the infidels".
Many of the recent attacks have been by suicide bombers - often young women.
Where the bombs are being made and where the bombers are being brainwashed is unclear but the Nigerian intelligence and security services need to do far more to stop the bloodshed.

Once again the range of targets is alarming and on this latest bloody Sunday a church and a mosque were bombed within hours of each other.

Jos has seen several attacks blamed on Boko Haram, including an incident in February when at least 15 died and in December last year when more than 30 people died.

The city has in the past seen clashes between Muslim and Christian communities and some have suggested that Boko Haram is looking to exploit these fault-lines.

On Friday, Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari described the recent attacks as "inhuman and barbaric".
In power now for just over a month, the president was elected on the pledge to defeat Boko Haram.

He said they were "the last desperate acts of fleeing agents of terrorism".
Boko Haram took control of a large area of north-eastern Nigeria last year and declared a caliphate - a state governed in accordance with Islamic law.
However, Nigeria's military, backed by troops from neighbouring countries, has recaptured most of the territory.
President Buhari has called for an expanded regional force to be deployed more rapidly.

OMG!!! Solar Impulse completes epic flight to Hawaii

Solar Impulse, the aeroplane that is powered only by the sun, has landed in Hawaii after making a historic 7,200km flight across the Pacific from Japan.

Pilot Andre Borschberg brought the vehicle gently down on to the runway of Kalaeloa Airport at 05:55 local time (15:55 GMT; 16:55 BST).
The distance covered and the time spent in the air - 118 hours - are records for manned, solar-powered flight.

The duration is also an absolute record for a solo, un-refuelled journey.
Mr Borschberg's time betters that of the American adventurer Steve Fossett who spent 76 hours aloft in a single-seater jet in 2006.

Despite being in the cockpit for so long, the Swiss pilot told our source that he did not feel that tired: "Interestingly, not really.
"I am also astonished. We got so much support during the flight from so many people; it gave me so much energy."

He said he looked forward to having a shower and visiting one of the many steakhouses suggested to him on the way into Hawaii's O'ahu island.
"We have some work to do, and to meet people, because I am sure a lot of people will want to see the aeroplane and discuss its technologies. But there is no way we shouldn't try some surfing," he joked.

Meeting Mr Borschberg in Kalaeloa was his partner on the Solar Impulse project, Bertrand Piccard.

The pair are sharing flying duties in their quest to circumnavigate the globe - an effort they began in Abu Dhabi, UAE, back in March.

It is Mr Piccard who will now fly the next leg from Hawaii to Phoenix, Arizona.
That will not be quite as far as the leg just completed, but it will still likely take four days and nights.

From Phoenix, Solar Impulse will head for New York and an Atlantic crossing that would eventually see the plane return to Abu Dhabi.
But, first, the Solar Impulse ground crew in Kalaeloa will need a few days to check over the aircraft.
During this servicing, meteorologists will once again take on the tricky task of finding a suitable flight window.
Getting Solar Impulse to Hawaii proved more problematic than anyone could have imagined.
The project was stuck in Nanjing, China, for five weeks before the first attempt to cross the ocean was made.
Solar Impulse's slow speed, light weight and 72m wingspan put significant constraints on the type of weather the vehicle can handle, and that first sortie was aborted after just one day in the air because of a fast developing cold front ahead of it.

Mr Borschberg diverted to Nagoya, and then had to wait a further month before being given the green light on Monday to again take off for Kalaeloa.

Even so, he has had to cross two weather fronts this week and has endured some uncomfortable turbulence as a consequence.

The Swiss team is using the various stopovers on its round-the-world journey to carry a campaigning message to the local people on the topic of clean technologies.

The Solar Impulse plane is not really intended to be a vision of the future of aviation. Rather, it is supposed to be a demonstration of the current capabilities of solar power in general.

The vehicle is covered in 17,000 photovoltaic cells. These either power the vehicle's electric motors directly, or charge its lithium-ion batteries, which sustain the plane during the night hours.

Mr Piccard told reporters at Kalaeloa: "Andre's flight was longer than all the other single-seater flights that had fuel. That's an incredible message.

"Now you can fly longer with no fuel than you can with fuel. So, what Andre has done is not only a historic first for aviation, it's a historic first for renewable energies. And this is why we are doing this project."
